I can recall a few years ago when I was a principal, a beloved teacher suddenly passed away. The faculty, school, and community was devastated. I remember getting complaints from faculty and parents that they had learned about it through a post on Facebook. The post went out hours before we could alert the faculty by phone using our emergency/snow chain list. Some of the faculty had worked with this teacher for more than 30 years. It truly was the hardest thing I have ever done professionally to address the faculty that morning at an emergency meeting.
As I reflected this morning over coffee and Facebook, someone had posted this blog about grief and social media. I share it with you in remembrance of my daughters’ schoolmate and ask you to send your love and prayers to her parents and family. In fact, send some more love and prayers to the countless other families who have, and will, grieve over the pointless loss of their loved ones due to substance use.
